Enchantico and Gokuldham School Celebrate World Book Day
Mumbai : Enchantico collaborated with Gokuldham School to celebrate World Book Day. This day is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books, authors and reading and is celebrated in over 100 countries. Gokuldham School celebrates this day every year as the principal believes reading is very essential for all children and the school and teachers inculcate and encourage this habit. Jayashree Narayanan, the principal for the secondary section for Gokuldham quotes Maragaret Fuller – ‘Today a Reader, tomorrow a Leader’. She said,‘In an increasingly digital world, there is no better opportunity to get back to books and appreciate the lifelong pleasure of reading. We celebrate World Book Day every year and I am privileged to have associated with Enchantico for the celebration this year.’

This year, Enchantico partnered with Gokuldham to create a host of activities to engage kids with books and immerse them in the joy for reading. Each of the activities was age appropriate. In the sense, the books picked were appropriate for that particular age group and the activities designed coincided with the literacy and development milestones of the children. 5 year olds learnt creativity and imagination by finding multiple uses of a single object. This activity was based on a book – Dada’s useless gift. 6 year olds learnt to interpret stories and were prompted to extend their imagination through building their own stories in a cartoon strip format. 7 year olds were given a multi-sensory experience of a story through a musical story-reading session. This activity was orchestrated by Enchantico in collaboration with Bajao.com. Kids were encouraged to bring their imagination alive through the multi-sensory reading experience. 8 year olds were engaged through a lovely book – The Fintastic Diary of Darcy Dolphin. They got into the shoes of the author and came up with own lexicon of nonsense words like ‘fintastic’.

There were some renowned authors and an RJ who participated and guided the older children. RJ for Radio One Anita Naidu Pawaskar guided kids on writing a book review and encouraged them to start reviewing books. The children actually reviewed their favorite books in the second half of the session. Later, Author and Enchantico co-founder Ravi Subramanian along with author Lalita Iyer guided children on what it takes to become a child author. Ravi’s daughter, Anusha is just 16 and has already published 2 books – the latest one being with Penguin. Ravi shared Anusha’s experience with the kids and said, 'I have been writing Adult Fiction for years. But after seeing my daughters journey from a voracious reader to an author, I am completely happy for seeding the germ of reading very early on'

All the activities that the kids engaged in could be checked by the parents online, so that they could get to see their children’s creativity in action. Enchantico plans to take these sessions to other schools so that the joy of reading becomes a contagion.

Shalini, the Chief Delight Officer at Enchantico said: 'World Book Day is a celebration of authors, writers, poets and publishers. Books have been friends to kids and adults alike through ages. What better way to celebrate this day than to partner with a school that believes in it as much as we do – To engage kids through books and activities based on them is just another step in fulfilling Enchantico’s mission'
